PMG alternators
Intelligent variable-speed power architectures for modern mobile and hybrid energy systems.
Mecc Alte’s Permanent Magnet Generator (PMG) range delivers a compact and highly efficient alternative to conventional alternator technology, designed for modern mobile power systems where fuel efficiency, reduced maintenance, hybrid integration and intelligent power management are increasingly critical.
A Smarter
Approach to
Mobile Power
Generation
Developed for both variable-speed and fixed-speed applications, the PMG platform combines advanced permanent magnet generator technology with integrated power conversion architectures to support AC generation, DC charging and hybrid electrification systems across a wide range of industries.
Unlike conventional alternators that rely on exciters, brushes and excitation systems to generate the magnetic field required for power production, Mecc Alte PMG technology uses a rare-earth permanent magnet external rotor to generate the magnetic field directly. This removes many of the components traditionally associated with wear, maintenance and efficiency losses, resulting in a compact, lightweight and highly efficient power generation platform engineered for modern mobile power, hybrid energy systems, and intelligent load management applications.
A different
approach to
power
generation
Conventional alternator systems are typically designed around fixed-speed operation, where the engine must maintain constant rpm regardless of actual power demand.
Mecc Alte’s PMG platform enables a fundamentally different approach.
Through high-frequency multipole permanent magnet generation combined with intelligent power conversion, PMG systems allow engine speed to adapt dynamically to real-time load requirements. This variable-speed architecture enables the generator system to deliver only the power required at any given moment, reducing fuel consumption, lowering emissions and improving overall system efficiency.
By removing excitation losses and reducing parasitic power consumption, PMG systems achieve efficiencies of up to 91% at full load whilst also supporting:
-
Reduced engine operating hours
-
Lower noise and vibration
-
Reduced maintenance requirements
-
Lower fuel consumption
-
Improved transient performance
-
Reduced mechanical wear
-
Compact equipment integration
In variable-load applications, fuel savings of up to 70% are achievable through intelligent load-based speed control, whilst fixed-load applications typically achieve efficiency improvements of 15–20% over conventional systems.
Two power architectures
Mecc Alte PMG technology supports two distinct power system architectures depending on application requirements.
PMG-AC – Variable-speed AC generation
The PMG-AC architecture combines the high-frequency PMG platform with an active two-stage AC/AC power conversion system to deliver controlled single-phase AC output independent of engine speed variation.
This architecture enables intelligent variable-speed generator systems where engine speed continuously adapts to real-time power demand while the converter maintains stable 50/60 Hz output, delivering intelligent power-on-demand operation with reduced fuel consumption, lower noise levels, improved transient response and reduced engine wear through compact generator architectures.
The integrated power conversion system includes PWM switching technology, CANBus communication, integrated protection systems, parallel operation capability, and embedded converter diagnostics.
PMG-DC – DC charging and electrification architecture
The PMG-DC platform combines high-frequency PMG generation with integrated AC/DC conversion and filtering to deliver controlled DC output for battery charging and DC power applications.
Available in both fixed-speed and variable-speed configurations, the PMG-DC architecture supports 24 VDC, 48 VDC, 72 VDC systems and higher-voltage battery charging architectures. Integrated filtering and high-frequency multipole operation help reduce ripple and improve charging performance across a wide range of battery technologies and operating profiles.
Smart power on demand
The PMG platform uses intelligent control architecture to continuously optimise engine speed and power generation according to real-time operating conditions. The system monitors load demand, DC current and voltage, battery charging profile, and power conversion requirements, then adjusts engine operation dynamically to maintain optimum efficiency whilst ensuring stable power delivery and improved battery charging performance.
Intelligent DC Power and Charging Applications
Lighting tower systems
PMG-DC systems are widely used in modern LED lighting tower applications, providing robust DC supply for LED lighting systems. Fixed-speed PMG lighting tower configurations are available at 1500 rpm, 1800 rpm and 2300 rpm, delivering up to 17 kW+ depending on system architecture and operating profile.
Battery charging systems
The PMG variable-speed DC charging architecture provides intelligent battery charging across multiple battery technologies. Using adaptive speed regulation and controlled charging profiles, the system automatically manages bulk charging, absorption phase, and float charging operations. Battery compatibility includes lead-acid, AGM, GEL, lithium-ion and LiFePO4 battery systems.
The PMG platform is suited to applications where efficiency, electrification, compact integration and intelligent power management are key operational drivers, including:
